This week was devoted to taking pictures of myself in my new home office. Each day I tried a different lens and two flash units to see what effect I could achieve.
This was inspired by a gallery that I saw long ago when I was working in London. It was by Rembrandt and it showed numerous sketches and paintings that were self-portraits. It was one of those exhibits that really sticks with you and I thought it would be fun to experiment with a number of shots, using different lenses.
I then took some of these shots and further experimented with them in Nik filters. I used both Color Efex 4 Pro and Silver Efex 2 Pro. Sometimes, I mixed the two to see what affects that I could achieve.
I was also curious as to what I could do with two flash units. Both are Canon 580 EX (before their new flash units were announced). I didn't do anything special to the units as far as diffusing the light. I did use bounce flash off of a white wall and often I only used the on-camera flash to trigger the one flash unit off to the side.
I do have studio lights, but I thought this would be a fun experiment. Again, I was inspired by Rembrandt and it seemed like the portraits of himself were experimenting with techniques that he later used in his paintings.
Enjoy!
